Q. What is a temporary internet file?

Answer: When you view a website, the page is stored on your computer in a temporary folder. If you decide to view the same page again at anytime, it will load from your temporary folder very quickly. Sometimes it is necessary to click the refresh button in the toolbar to reload the latest version of the page.

Q. What is the difference between dial-up and broadband(ADSL)?

Answer: Broadband is usually 10 to 20 times faster than dial-up depending on which speed line you choose. If you decide to install broadband a new ADSL or cable modem is required.

Q. What is webmail?

Answer: Webmail allows you to access and send email via the internet, on a web page from anywhere in the world. Most email suppliers provide these web pages.

Q. What is the difference between a search engine and a browser?

Answer: A browser is software which allows you to view web pages e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape etc. Search engines allow you to find web pages on the internet related to keywords e.g. Google, MSN, Yahoo etc.

Q. If I change my dial-up or broadband supplier what happens to my email address?

Answer: You may sometimes keep your existing email address depending on the supplier, usually for a small fee. The alternative is to keep it for a short period and forward emails to your new email address.

Q. What is the difference between a firewall and antivirus software?

Answer: A firewall stops most viruses from getting to your PC from web pages and antivirus software scans your computer to remove anything it identifies that has slipped through the firewall.

Think of the firewall as the prevention and the antivirus as the cure.
